Position Summary:
Hospital Unit Secretary is a member of the health care team who, under supervision, performs diversified clerical duties which relate to organizing, coordinating, and facilitating varied functions and activities on a patient care unit. Performs specific job criteria/performance standards according to prevailing applicable unit, division, hospital and professional standards.

Duties & Responsibilities:
Answers call lights and provides intervention, and/or communicate patient’s need to appropriate team member. Assist patients with nutritional needs. Maintains proper stock of forms and supplies. Manage and maintain patient medical records. Thins charts and scan documents as indicated. Labels charts clearly with patient's name, physician's name and room number. Assists in the orientation of new staff. Provides general information and orient patient/family to the environment. Assists with routine maintenance rounds and initiates work orders. Assists with the coordination of the patient discharge process. Maintains a clean, safe, aesthetically pleasing work environment. Assist with obtaining admission consents forms (as assigned). Observes the patient for any behavior that could indicate potential problems, and alerts the nursing staff immediately (as assigned). Observes room for safe environment for the patient, visitors, and staff. Remains alert and with the patient at all times (as assigned). Demonstrates competency in crisis intervention techniques (as assigned). Promotes efforts towards a restraint-free environment. Intervenes where indicated and alerts nursing staff (as assigned). Reports events through the incident reporting system (as assigned). Demonstrates behaviors of service excellence and CARE values (Compassion, Accountability, Respect and Expertise). Performs all other related job duties as assigned.

Experience:
Generally requires 0 to 3 years of related experience.

Education:
High School diploma is required.

License Certification:
American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers certification with at least 6 months validity required.

Knowledge Skill Abilities:
Ability to analyze, organize and prioritize work accurately while meeting multiple deadlines. Ability to communicate effectively in both oral and written form. Ability to handle difficult and stressful situations with critical thinking and professional composure. Ability to understand and follow instructions. Knowledge and skill in use of job appropriate technology and software applications. Ability to exercise sound and independent judgment. Must meet and maintain all unit specific and organizational skills/competencies, certifications/licensures, as required by the nursing area.

Physical Demands:
Job function is sedentary in nature and requires sitting for extended periods of time. Function may require frequent standing or walking. Must be able to lift or carry objects weighing up to 20 pounds. Jobs in this group are required to have close visual acuity to perform activities such as: extended use of computers, preparing and analyzing data and analytics, and other components of a typical office environment. Work Environment:
Jobs in this group are required to function in a fast paced environment with occasional high pressure or emergent and stressful situations. Frequent interaction with a diverse population including team members, providers, patients, insurance companies and other members of the public. Function is subject to inside environmental conditions, with occasional outdoor exposures. Possible exposure to various environments such as: communicable diseases, toxic substances, medicinal preparations and other conditions common to a hospital and medical office environment. May wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) such as gloves or a mask when exposed to hospital environment outside of office.
