This is elementary patient care and related work in the care and treatment of patients. Employees in this classification perform assistant assignments in one or more areas of patient care not requiring the knowledge and skill of licensed practical or registered nurses. Emphasis of the work is on furnishing personal service to patients; performing patient care activities and related non-professional services; and assisting nursing and medical staffs in completing examinations and treatments. In some work situations, incumbents participate in food service tasks for patients. Employees receive planned in-service training and assignment of more responsible work is contingent upon individual aptitudes and abilities. Duties performed are in accordance with established nursing service regulations, practices and policies, and special instructions from nursing or medical superiors. Routine tasks and most related non-professional services are performed with independence of action. Direct contact with patients is subject to close supervision by nursing superiors who assist with problems and review work in progress.
