Position Summary: 
Hospital Communications Specialist professionally and efficiently answers and connects all calls to the area requested. Responds quickly and accurately to all emergency code calls while activating the appropriate emergency for each facility. Assists with all requests for information in a professional manner, while assisting in the daily operations of the communications department.

Duties & Responsibilities:
Answer and routes calls efficiently to minimize wait time. Accurately locates the correct facility staff member or department and connects calls appropriately. Provides correct contact information dependent on time of day for each hospital provided service. Pages all personnel as authorized in department procedures. Does Overhead paging for specific facilities when required for emergency codes or STAT calls. Pages, verifies, follows up and records all emergency codes on appropriate slip. Monitors CODE BLUE indicator and all dedicated EMERGENCY CODE phone lines for all facilities. Responds immediately and activates call down process for emergency codes as warranted for all facilities. Activates MASS communications as requested by administration. Calls appropriate facility to verify the arrival of teams after each emergency. Documents log for each emergency appropriately depending on facility. Notifies security, and others requested staff members as needed for emergency codes. Reports any telephone repair problems to appropriate areas as directed in departmental procedures. Assist with long distance calls for authorized personal as appropriate, documents calls in appropriate log. Locates interpreter for non-English-speaking individuals as needed. Supplies pagers for staff as needed, communicates with pager vendor as needed for proper forwarding of services. Answer, communicate and provide information for all calls coming in via the TDD (telecommunications devise for the deaf). Follows correct departmental process and procedures for each facility. Demonstrates behaviors of service excellence and CARE values (Compassion, Accountability, Respect and Expertise). Performs all other related job duties as assigned.

Experience:
Generally requires 3 to 5 years of related experience.

Education:
High School diploma is required.

License Certification:
Valid license or certification is required as needed, based on the job or specialty.

Knowledge Skill Abilities:
Ability to analyze, organize and prioritize work accurately while meeting multiple deadlines. Ability to communicate effectively in both oral and written form. Ability to handle difficult and stressful situations with critical thinking and professional composure. Ability to understand and follow instructions. Ability to exercise sound and independent judgment. Knowledge and skill in use of job appropriate technology and software applications.

Physical Demands:
Job function is sedentary in nature and requires sitting for extended periods of time. Function may require frequent standing or walking. Must be able to lift or carry objects weighing up to 20 pounds. Jobs in this group are required to have close visual acuity to perform activities such as: extended use of computers, preparing and analyzing data and analytics, and other components of a typical office environment. Work Environment:
Jobs in this group are required to function in a fast paced environment with occasional high pressure or emergent and stressful situations. Frequent interaction with a diverse population including team members, providers, patients, insurance companies and other members of the public. Function is subject to inside environmental conditions, with occasional outdoor exposures. Possible exposure to various environments such as: communicable diseases, toxic substances, medicinal preparations and other conditions common to a hospital and medical office environment. May wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) such as gloves or a mask when exposed to hospital environment outside of office.
